From 21 February to 7 March 2015 next visit of five-year students of ETU "Public Relations" Department to Towson University (USA) was held  in the framework of cooperation between the two universities which has been carried out since 1993. Coordinator of the program is a senior lecturer of “Public Relations” Department Tatyana Sheremetyeva who told us about the trip:

"This year visit to Towson University was in doubt due to the political situation. We were not sure that the cooperation program will continue. However, when we got in touch with the Americans it appeared that our doubts were groundless and that the partners from Towson were very interested in work with us. Later during our meetings the university administration strongly confirmed that this project is a priority for them. The result of the visit was an additional agreement on expansion of the program for three more years.

This year the scope of our cooperation with Towson University expanded. We used to cooperate with the Department which joined with us in specialty Mass Media Communications and Communication Study. But this year we also started to cooperate with Department of Political Science and Department of Foreign Languages. We met not only with the University Club of Public Relations but also with the Association of Towson University Students - an organization that arranges a lot of events. Moreover, we had meetings, round tables and discussions with the Club of Students engaged in international and political relations.

Also there was another change. Imre Communications that allotted us a task to solve the case for them, ceased its activities on the Russian market. So an important part of this program at this time was not available. But we were given four research tasks by Department of Political Science. The first was called "Trends in the Russian market" which covered trends in art, clothes, music, politics, and economics. Our students made a presentation which was visited not only by students, but also by teachers and guidance of Study Abroad Office of  Towson University.

The second research task was devoted to the SWOT-analysis of promotion of Russian contemporary art to the western market. It was not less exciting than the first one. The other two presentations corresponded our specialty of the market of public relations.

Due to the fact that cooperation with departments had expanded, program of activities that students attended and became more extensive too. Instead of the usual two classes a day they had four classes: lectures and classes on entirely new subjects.

Some changes concerned me personally. This year I was invited to deliver lectures and seminars for American students, because foreign opinion is very important for Americans. In Towson there are many specialties that deal with Eastern Europe and Russia, in particular, their market and psychology. Moreover, at Department of Political Science there is a subject called Russian-American relations.

The cultural program was also slightly different from that of previous years. In addition to Washington and New York, that we always attended, we went to Pennsylvania, Lancaster and Philadelphia.

I think that this is a great experience for our students. They are given a certificate, that is appreciated in Russia very much.

But it's not just the certificate. Too many students say that after this trip they changed views on many things like education and training. United States as well as Russia is a huge country where many people of different nationalities live. American approach to career, to design of your own life, to the planning of time is totally different. When you see it, immerse in it, you start to think about many things seriously.

Many of those who participated in this program say that they changed the views, and that helped their further careers. I can give you some examples. Artem Kudryavtsev, who graduated four years ago, was invited to work in Imre Communications as an expert on Russian and Eastern European markets after this trip. This helped his career very much: he worked in Skolkovo, in Yandex, and now in FRII (Foundation for Internet initiatives). Another example is Pavel Belov, who went to Towson twice, and then followed the path of startups and now he is a consultant and Vice-President of the business incubator "Ingria".

I can name a long list of our graduates who have realized themselves successfully. Of course, a trip to Towson helped them somehow, but above all they did a lot by themselves, because they worked hard during five years of study, participated in the activities of the university and then managed to apply gained experience into practice.
