Laboratory named after Zhohres Alferov was opened at LETI
On June 25, 2015 outstanding graduate of our University, Nobel Laureate in Physics Zhores Alferov visited SPbGETU “LETI”.
On June 25, 2015 outstanding graduate of our University, Nobel Laureate in Physics Zhores Alferov visited SPbGETU “LETI”. The main outcome of the visit was the opening of laboratory named after Zohres Alferov at Department of Quantum and Optical Electronics (KEOP) and awarding of two scholarships to the best students of Department of Quantum and Optical Electronics and Department of Micro- and nanoelectronics.
Zhores Alferov is a graduate of Faculty of Electronic Engineering - predecessor of Faculty of Electronics. For more than thirty years he managed the Base Department of Optoelectronics of our University in Ioffe Institute, which prepared a great number of outstanding scientists in the field of solid-state physics.
The main part of the visit took place in the conference hall of Scientific Educational Center of Microelectronics and diagnostics of ETU that is hosted by Professor V. Luchinin, where in the presence of Academician Zhores Alferov, ETU Rector V. Kutuzov, Dean of Faculty of Electronics A. V. Solomonov and Head of Department of KEOP V. P. Afanasyev mini-conference was held. There future holders of scholarships founded by our famous alumni, students Eugeniy M. Stepanov and Alexander N. Vasilchenko gave a brief presentations of their scientific work.
In the final part of the visit, the guest of honor visited Department of Quantum and Optical Electronics, where the grand opening of the laboratory, named in honor of the great scientist, was held. At the ceremony Zhores Alferov said many kind words to his Alma Mater, wished the university and the department further steady development, and left his autograph on the wall of the laboratory.
Zhores Alferov studied at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and graduated in 1952 with honors. It was here where Alferov started his career in science.
