LETI will be engaged in Translational Medicine
On September 10, 2015 the first meeting of Coordinating Council of Medical Research and Education Cluster "Translational Medicine"was held in Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre.
On September 10, 2015 the first meeting of Coordinating Council of Medical Research and Education Cluster "Translational Medicine" which was attended by rectors of the leading universities of St. Petersburg was held in Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre.
At play there was the question of establishment of the cluster and of the Steering Board, formation of scientific and technical advice in various areas, as well as development of strategic research agenda. The meeting resulted in creation of cluster memorandum signed by Director General of Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre Evgeny Shlyakhto and Rectors of the leading universities of St. Petersburg. The document provides for the joint development and implementation of effective medicines and high-tech biomaterials, advanced technologies of diagnosis and treatment, as well as educational programs and resources. Scientific research will be carried out in such areas as cardiology, endocrinology, rehabilitation, perinatal medicine, and study of various diseases and body systems.
The centre and the basic infrastructure establishment of "Translational Medicine" cluster became Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Cente. Members of the cluster are following universities:
- St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University "LETI";
- St. Petersburg Polytechnic University;
- ITMO university;
- St. Petersburg State Chemical-Pharmaceutical Academy;
- National State University of Physical Culture, Sport and Health named after Lesgaft.
The following representatives of ETU "LETI" became the members of Coordinating Council of the cluster:
- Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Rector Vladimir Kutuzov;
- Doctor of Technical Sciences, Head of Electron devices and Systems Department Nikolay N. Potrahov;
- Doctor of Technical Sciences, Head of Department of Bioengineering Systems Zafar M. Yuldashev;
- Ph.D., assistant professor of Radio Systems Department Alexander Krasichkov.
"Translational medicine is a new stage of development of medicine providing the transfer of the latest achievements of basic research in the fields of biology, physics, chemistry, electronics, radio engineering, computer science into practical health care in order to improve quality of life and health of people, - says Head of Department of Bioengineering Systems Z. M. Yuldashev. - Our school has extensive experience in development of information-measuring systems of medical devices for diagnosis, monitoring, control of a patient and disease risk management. I am sure that working together in this project will bring all the participants great benefit, both in research and in education."
Cooperation of ETU "LETI" and Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Cente began in 1980 with the founding of Institute of Cardiology, which later became the basis of the Center. During the years of joint research work unique developments were carried out. In 2010, LETI opened basic department of Medical Information and Bioengineering Systems at the Federal Center of Heart, Blood and Endocrinology named after Almazov in which leading researchers of the Centre deliver lectures and supervise research of students. In their turn, students of our university practice at the modern medical complexes, participate in research, perform the final qualifying work within the walls of the Centre. This cooperation became the basis for the opening of Master's program "Information systems and technology for hospitals," which demanded not only graduates of LETI but also of other Russian universities. Subsequently, many graduates get work at the Center. This is a good example of fruitful cooperation between the Centre and LETI in scientific and educational spheres.
The decision to create a cluster "Translational Medicine" was taken at a meeting of Scientific Council of Ministry of Health of Russia on February 11, 2014 under the chairmanship of the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation V. I. Skvortsov. The concept of creation and development of cluster program was approved by the Board of Trustees of Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Cente chaired by the Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko.
