Students from Bulgaria at ETU “LETI” – 70 years of history

2019 marks the 70th anniversary of higher education cooperation between ETU “LETI” and Bulgaria.

On February 13th, 2018 Olga Y. Vasilieva, Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria – Boyko Kotzev at the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The event was organized to celebrate Bulgarian presidency in the Council of the European Union.

Partners discussed further development of academic mobility programs, importance of fostering interest in the Russian language among Bulgarian students and pupils. 

As was stated by the ambassador, cooperation between the Russian Federation and Bulgaria is quite extensive. About 313 Bulgarian students are enrolled in Russian educational facilities at the moment.

Saint-Petersburg Electrotechnical University has been training Bulgarian highly qualified personnel for the needs of the economy of the Republic of Bulgaria for about 70 years now.  First of them graduated from ETU “LETI” in 1952.  Since then ETU “LETI” has given education to more than 400 Bulgarian boys and girls. They studied radio and electric engineering, IT, electronics, automation and so on.

Plamen Nedelchev is one of the most successful graduates of ETU. He is a distinguished engineer at CISCO – one of the largest high-tech companies in the world. In 2016 Plamen visited his alma mater and met with his former professors –Dmitrii V. Puzankov, professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Mikhail S. Kuprianov, Dean of School of Computer Technologies and Informatics. Plamen Nedelchev concluded his visit by delivering a lecture in English on Internet of Things and its application in the modern world.

"I owe my career in CISCO to my alma mater. I received excellent education here. There are a lot of brilliant professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. I remember all of them by name. Now many years later I am back at ETU “LETI” and I can hardly express how happy I am. This feeling gives me goose bumps!"

Right now a student from Bulgaria, Isabella Christova is studying at the Public Relations Department of the University. For Isabella it was imperative to get higher education in Russia.

"My grandfather was coming to Russia for business quite often during Soviet times and he always spoke warmly about this country. There are a lot of wonderful professors at ETU. My fellow students are very kind, they are always ready to help. And, of course, Saint-Petersburg with its beautiful architecture is in my heart forever".
